Significant progress in the Grosseto-Fano upgrade, E78 important European road corridor

Work continues on the functional and regulatory upgrading of the section of SS223 between Grosseto and Fano, a suburban road of great importance to the Tuscany region, of which it is one of the main central crossings. The project, commissioned by ANAS in 2020, is part of the larger context of the E78 Grosseto-Fano corridor.

Itinera is currently engaged in the construction of the new roadway in the direction of Siena, consisting of four viaducts and a natural tunnel, for a total length of about 3 km. Subsequently, once this phase is completed, the existing track will be renewed, which will then form the roadway in the direction of Grosseto.

As part of the ongoing work, blasting operations were conducted at the end of September on the rock mass facing the southern entrance of the natural tunnel, which will be named “Poggio Tondo”. Through detailed surveys, seismic investigations, use of drones and controlled charges conducted by specialized operators, the tunnel’s exit face was then achieved.

On October 14, in the presence of ANAS representatives and the ITINERA team involved in the project, the tunnel breakthrough took place.
