04 Jul 2024 Itinera celebrates Hammarby Canal Project’s milestone, Stockholm Metro
Itinera has successfully completed the breakthrough of the tunnel in the Hammarby Canal project. Only a few days after the breakthrough of the Arenastaden – Södra Hagalund assignment, Itinera achieved the same milestone in the two contracts where it is currently working on for the extension of the Swedish capital’s metro system, both promoted by the Stockholm Region.
The project, worth about 90 million euros, involves the construction of a new section belonging to the Blue Line called the “Hammarby Canal,” the only one to be below water level. Specifically, it is planned to build the Hammarby Canal station, located at a depth of 40 meters, and three rock tunnel sections of with a total length of approximately 1,100 meters.
“After two years of tunnel excavation, we have reached this important milestone. It has been an exciting challenge to build a station in rock underwater; we have had very poor rock quality in several zones under the canal.” says Frida Hesselgren – Hammarby Canal Project Manager, in the picture above. “From the northern ticket hall, which is located in a park in central Stockholm, we will continue with a shorter escalator shaft into the basement of an existing multi-story building and build the northern entrance and a new large bomb shelter there. We’re now now approaching the most technically complicated task of this contract with meticulous production planning.”
