13 Jan 2025 Demolition and reconstruction of Gravagna Viaduct, an important connection for central Italy
Itinera is working at the modernization project of the Gravagna viaduct on the A15 Parma-La Spezia motorway, a crucial connection for central Italy dating back to the 1970s that connects Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna. Through this very complex intervention due to the magnitude of the infrastructure and its location between the Apennine foothills, Itinera is contributing to SALT concessionaire’s commitment in increasing the motorway’s levels of safety and durability.
Works began in the fall of 2023 and, to minimize traffic disruptions, involve the demolition and reconstruction, at first, of the northbound carriageway and then of the southbound carriageway, thus avoiding total closure of the viaduct. To reduce traffic impacts, moreover, dynamic management of the three lanes available for transit is adopted, ensuring that two lanes are always passable in the prevailing traffic direction.
Having completed the demolition of the northern carriageway, with the most significant moment given by the controlled explosion for the demolition of the three metal arches supporting the decks, Itinera has now moved on to the reconstruction phase. More than 9,500 cubic meters of concrete, 1,800 tons of rebar and about 2 km of new crash barriers will be used.
The timeline calls for the reopening of the north carriageway by Easter 2026, with demolition of the south carriageway to begin in late summer of that year.
